Piano care Think of your piano as a music mechanism, which implies regular adjustment of its moving parts due to wear and of its sensitivity to its environment. Unlike a mere piece of furniture, the piano breathes. Climate control is #1. Dehumidifiers with an automatic sensor are recommended for tuning stability and salt-air corrosion prevention. As the climate control systems for pianos are more effective when the air is undisturbed, keep an idle piano covered to insulate it from rapid or drastic humidity changes. Air conditioning lowers the humidity drasti- cally. Keep airflow of cold or heat away from the piano. Expect tuning instability if the cooling or heating is sporadic. Keep strong sunlight from baking the piano case. Rising and falling temperatures affect the humidity of the air around the piano. Sun will also bleach-out the color of the veneer. Keep drinks and vases of water off of the piano. Water damage swelling and warping of parts is expensive. Have the piano tuned regularly by asking for a reminder call from the technician when service is due. Keep foreign objects out of the interior (monitor the keiki). Keep cats off of the strings of grands ( they love nesting there). Keep a watch out for mice and bugs which will chew everything deep inside. |
